A Brief History of Japan

History of the Shinsengumi (1863-1868):

After Commodore Perry arrived in Japan in 1853, the Japanese Shogunate were unable to agree on whether to embrace Westernization. The Shogunate further showed indecisiveness by asking all Daimyos for their opinions on the subject. The people started doubting the capabilities of the Shogunate to run their country. Many started to revolt against the Bakufu (government). The three major opposers to the Tokugawa Bakufu were Choshu, Satsuma, and Tosa Daimyo. Of these three, Satsuma supported some Westernization to strengthen the country. Choshu, on the other hand, rejected Western influences and wanted to enforce a "closed door" foreign policy and drive all barbarians out of Japan.

In the early 1860s, the Tokugawa Bakufu enlisted over 200 master-less samurais from all over the country and formed the original policing force in Kyoto. But the Tokugawa Bakufu's plans backfired. Most of the men they enlisted were actually sympathizers of the Choshu group, and thus the group was disbanded. Only around 20 or so men out of the original 200 remained in Kyoto and formed the "Shinsengumi," which means "Newly Selected Corp."

The leaders of the Shinsengumi were Kondo Isami and Serizawa Kamo. Both were fierce swordsman but Kamo was also a drunk and usurped his power to gain wealth and pick fights. As a result, the Shinsengumi gained a bad reputation and earned the nickname "Mibu-ro" or Mibu Wolves. The Tokugawa Bakufu were displeased with the reputation of the Shinsengumi, and ordered Kondo to assassinate Kamo, which he did. After Kamo's assassination, Kondo became the captain of the Shinsengumi. Kondo's best friend and right hand man, Hijikata Toshizo became the Vice-Captain. People feared the Shinsengumi because of their strict codes of conduct and their ability to kill without consequence.

Ikedaya Incident (July 1864):

The Ikedaya Incident was probably the most famous event of the Shinsengumi. The Choshu prepared plans to overthrow Tokugawa by setting fire to Kyoto. The Shinsengumi learned of this plan after capturing a Choshu member. However, the Choshu realized that their plans might have been discovered and they arranged a secret meeting at Ikedaya. On the night of the meeting, the Shinsengumi attacked Ikedaya, killing and capturing many of the Choshu members. This was the turning point for the Shinsengumi. They became famous as the protectors of Kyoto and many flocked to join the group.

Meiji Restoration (1866 - 1869):

After their defeat, the Choshu set up an alliance with the Satsuma Daimyo. They realized that they shared common goals, as both wanted to oust the weak Shogunate and restore Japan. Tokugawa officially surrendered in 1867. Emperor Komei took over and that era is named "Meiji," or "enlightened rule."
The Shinsengumi met an unfortunate end as the Tokugawa Bakufu was overthrown. They lost their status as police and were branded as outlaws. Kondo was captured and executed at the age of 35. Still, the remaining Shinsengumi continued to fight. Hijikata escaped capture and fought in the Boshin War in 1868. Eventually, he fled to Hokkaido and joined a resistance group there. He was later killed in battle, also at the age of 35. This marked the end of the Meiji Restoration, as all of the Tokugawa supporters had been defeated.
